Top 20 most dominant Maine high school football teams in the MaxPreps era

After compiling data since 2004, we have come up with the 20 best high school football programs in Maine.

It has been 10 years now that MaxPreps has put out football computer rankings, presented by the Army National Guard.

That's plenty of time to come up with a solid list of which programs have been the most dominant during the MaxPreps era.

For the purpose of the rankings, each team will be awarded points based off where it finished in the computer rankings after each season. For example, if a team finished No. 1 overall it receives 25 points. If the team finished No. 25 overall, it would get one point. A team also receives 30 points for winning a state title and 15 for being the runner-up.

Most dominant Maine football programs in the MaxPreps era

1. Bonny Eagle (Standish) - 349 points
Overall record: 85-21
The Scots have five Class A state titles and four No. 1 finishes.

2. Mountain Valley (Rumford) - 299
Overall record: 89-22
Mountain Valley has four Class B state championships and six Top 10 finishes.

3. Foxcroft (Dover-Foxcroft) - 228
Overall record: 87-25
The Ponies have six Top 10 finishes to go along with two Class C state titles.

4. Lawrence (Fairfield) - 218
Overall record: 79-22
Lawrence has seven Top 25 finishes and one state championship victory.

5. Cheverus (Portland) - 207
Overall record: 64-34
Cheverus has finished in the Top 5 five times and lays claim to two Class A state titles.



6. Leavitt (Turner) - 203
Overall record: 84-22
The Hornets have two state titles and seven Top 25 finishes.

7. Winslow - 162
Overall record: 73-31
Winslow has four runner-up finishes and six Top 25 finishes.

8. Thornton Academy (Saco) - 159
Overall record: 72-25
The Trojans have eight Top 20 finishes and one Class A state championship trophy.

9. Bangor - 148
Overall record: 76-31
Bangor has six Top 15 finishes and three runner-up finishes.

10. Deering (Portland) - 146
Overall record: 61-40
The Rams have nine Top 25 finishes, including a No. 3 ranking in 2008.

11. Lisbon (Lisbon Falls) - 137
Overall record: 75-27
Lisbon has two Class C state championship victories and six Top 25 finishes.



12. Bucksport - 121
Overall record: 76-27
Bucksport has one Class C state title and a No. 1 finish among their four Top 25 finishes.

13. Wells - 114
Overall record: 66-33
The Warriors have seven Top 25 finishes including a No. 2 ranking in 2011, along with one Class B state title.

14. Cape Elizabeth - 112
Overall record: 69-33
The Capers have one runner-up finish and seven Top 25 finishes.

15. Yarmouth - 111
Overall record: 41-30
Yarmouth has two Class C state championships and two No. 3 finishes.

16. Mt. Blue (Farmington) - 110
Overall record: 65-37
The Cougars lay claim to a Class B state title and five Top 25 finishes.

17. Windham - 107
Overall record: 48-44
Windham has five Top 20 finishes to accompany one Class A state title.



17. Gardiner - 107
Overall record: 68-34
Gardiner has nine Top 25 finishes and one Class B state championship victory.

19. Gorham - 100
Overall record: 43-47
The Rams have five Top 20 finishes and one runner-up finish.

20. York - 96
Overall record: 65-36
York has totaled eight Top 25 finishes to go along with one runner-up finish.
