Basketball Recap: Springfield Takes a Loss

Springfield was not able to break out of their rough patch on Thursday as the team picked up their seventh straight loss. They took a blow against the McClave Cardinals, falling 80-35. The Longhorns were in a tough position after the first half, with the score already sitting at 51-19.

Springfield's loss came despite strong showings from Colby Batterton and Brennan Rothman. Batterton went 6 of 13 en route to 13 points and three steals, while Rothman went 5 for 7 on his way to 11 points. That was a full 37.1% of Springfield's points, marking the third time in a row he's posted more than a third of the team's points.

McClave's success was the result of a balanced attack that saw several players step up, but Tuff Kelley led the charge by dropping a double-double on 20 points and 11 rebounds. Kelley's afternoon made it six games in a row in which he has scored at least ten points. Another player making a difference was Drew Howe, who went 8 for 10 on his way to 20 points.

Springfield's defeat dropped their record down to 1-7. As for McClave, the win (which was their eighth in a row) raised their record to 9-1.

Springfield wasted no time getting back out on the court and has already played their next game, a 55-44 loss against Primero on the 17th. As for McClave, they will head out to challenge Limon at 7:30 p.m. on January 23rd. McClave is strutting in with some offensive muscle as they've averaged 65.2 points per game this season.
