Baseball Game Preview: Oshkosh West Wildcats vs. St. Mary Catholic Zephyrs

The Oshkosh West Wildcats will take on the St. Mary Catholic Zephyrs at 4:30 p.m. on Monday. Both come into the matchup bolstered by wins in their previous matches.

Oshkosh West barely beat Wautoma the last time the pair played, but that sure wasn't the case this time around. The Wildcats blew past the Hornets 13-7 on Thursday. The high-scoring effort was just what the Wildcats needed considering they were shut out in their previous contest.

Landon Ubrig was a standout: he scored two runs and stole a base while going 2-for-5. Evan Johnson was another key player, scoring three runs while going 3-for-4.

Meanwhile, St. Mary Catholic had to travel to play their first game of the season, but the final result was worth the trip. They won by a run and slipped past Ripon 3-2.

Ethan Plutz made a big impact no matter where he played. He looked comfortable on the mound, striking out six batters over four innings while giving up just one earned run off six hits. Those six strikeouts gave him a new career-high. He was also solid in the batter's box, getting on base in all four of his plate appearances with two stolen bases.

In other pitching news, Grant Brazzale looked comfortable as he pitched two innings while giving up no earned runs off one hit.

Back at the plate, the team relied heavily on Joe Pirillo, who went 2-for-4 with two stolen bases and one RBI. Those two stolen bases gave him a new career-high.

Oshkosh West couldn't quite get it done against St. Mary Catholic in their previous matchup back in April of 2024 as they fell 6-1. Can the Wildcats avenge their defeat or is history doomed to repeat itself? We'll find out soon enough.
