Herrin is 1-9 against Carterville since May of 2018 but they'll have a chance to close the gap a little bit on Friday. The Tigers will look to defend their home field against the Lions at 11:00 a.m. Herrin has given up an average of 7.7 runs per game this season, but Friday's game will give them a chance to turn things around.
Herrin came into their game on Wednesday off a hard-fought close win, but unfortunately suffered a serious change of fortune. They came up short against Marion, falling 12-2.
Herrin saw three different players step up and record at least one hit. One of them was Sophia Schramm, who went 1-for-3 with two RBI.
Meanwhile, Carterville had already won nine in a row (a stretch where they outscored their opponents by an average of 9.1 runs) and they went ahead and made it ten on Wednesday. Their pitcher stepped up to hand the Bruins a 10-0 shutout. The result was nothing new for the Lions, who have now won 11 matchups by six runs or more so far this season.
The team relied heavily on Savannah Gibbs, who went 2-for-3 with one triple, one stolen base, and two RBI. Kendall Henrikesen was another key player, scoring a run while going 1-for-3.
Carterville was getting hits left and right and finished the game having posted a batting average of .417. That was just more of the same: they've now posted a batting average of .318 or higher in five consecutive games.
Carterville's victory was their 26th straight at home dating back to last season, which pushed their record up to 14-2. Those home wins came thanks in part to their pitching effort, having only surrendered 0.7 runs on average over those games. As for Herrin, their defeat dropped their record down to 8-7.
Friday's contest will be a test for both teams' pitchers. Herrin hasn't had any issues making contact this season, having earned a batting average of .314. However, it's not like Carterville struggles in that department as they've averaged .379. With both teams so capable at the plate, fans should be ready for an impressive hitting performance.
