Basketball Recap: South Guilford HomeSchool Takes a Loss

South Guilford HomeSchool lost against Shining Light Academy back in January and unfortunately they wound up with the same result on Saturday. The Cougars fell 63-51 to the Knights. While losing is never fun, the Cougars can't take it too hard given the team's big disadvantage in MaxPreps' North Carolina basketball rankings (they are ranked 387th, while the Knights are ranked 149th).

When it comes to explaining why South Guilford HomeSchool lost, don't look at Nate Martin. Despite the final result, he dropped a double-double with 31 points and 12 rebounds. The game was Martin's fourth in a row with at least 26 points. Brian Beirne was another key player, putting up seven points.

South Guilford HomeSchool's defeat was their third straight on the road, which dropped their record down to 6-11. As for Shining Light Academy, the victory (which was their sixth in a row) raised their record to 11-3.

South Guilford HomeSchool will have a little extra prep time after the loss as they won't be playing again for a while. They'll take on Legacy Athletics at 8:00 p.m. on January 5, 2026. Shining Light Academy and Phoenix Academy will round out the year against one another at 4:00 p.m. on the 29th. The Knights will be up against the Firebirds' rather soft defense (which has allowed 66 points per contest), so fans could be in store for a big offensive performance.
