Basketball Recap: Colson Nelsen's Big Game Can't Quite Lead Wayne over Wahoo

Wayne has been a dominant force so far, but they're in the middle of a mini-slump at the moment. They took a 64-48 bruising from the Wahoo Warriors on Tuesday. The result was an unpleasant reminder to the Blue Devils of the 66-39 loss they experienced in the pair's previous head-to-head fixture back in February of 2024.

Wayne's defeat came despite a true team effort with many players turning in solid performances. Perhaps the best among them was Colson Nelsen, who posted 14 points. Nelsen is also on a roll when it comes to three-point shooting accuracy, as he's posted one of at least 40% in the last three games he's played. Gavin Redden was another key player, going 6 of 12 to rack up 13 points and five boards.

Wahoo's success was the result of a balanced attack that saw several players step up, but Dylan Simons led the charge by almost dropping a double-double with 19 points and nine rebounds. Another player making a difference was Cody Hesser, who went 6 for 9 en route to 12 points and six boards.

Wayne's loss dropped their record down to 18-4. As for Wahoo, the win (which was their 11th in a row) raised their record to 17-3.

Wayne and Wahoo should be looking forward to their upcoming games as both have a sizable advantage in the MaxPreps Nebraska Rankings. Wayne will square off against Wynot on Thursday up 107 places (26 vs. 133). Wayne will be looking to keep their six-game home win streak alive. Meanwhile, Wahoo (ranked eighth) will meet Plattsmouth (ranked 104th) at 7:30 p.m. on Thursday. Wayne is strutting in with some offensive muscle as they've averaged 54.7 points per game this season.
