League recap: Imperial tops Central to extend winning streak

Imperial Valley recap November 5, 2013

Imperial extended the longest winning streak in Imperial Valley this week by beating Central, 45-28. This was the team's ninth consecutive win.

Calexico moved up to 600 from 628 in the state rankings this week, the biggest jump in the league. The Bulldogs were able to move up by defeating Palo Verde Valley 56-28.

Imperial's offense was unstoppable this week, as it produced the league's top passer, rusher and receiver. Chris Carter threw for 104 and 2 touchdowns and DaJon Staton had 38 yards receiving. On the ground Royce Freeman chipped in 311 yards. Austyn Smith helped Imperial's passing attack out by catching 1 ball for 24 yards.

Kerry Legarra's team's dynamic duo of Carter and Staton proved tough for the Spartans to stop, as they were the top passer and receiver in the league this week. Smith helped Imperial's passing attack out by catching 1 ball for 24 yards.

Freeman was a passing and rushing force as the Tigers topped Central. Freeman's key target this week was Staton, who caught 3 passes for 38 yards.

Freeman was a force in the backfield as Imperial beat Michael Hobbs' team.

The Yellowjackets' Logan Whiting and Damian Ramirez led the league in both passing and receiving yards. 6-1 quarterback Whiting has thrown for 834 yards this season, while Ramirez has 44 catches for 1,027 yards. Freeman from the Tigers leads the league in rushing with 2,308 yards.

One of Imperial Valley's premier quarterbacks will go head-to-head with its top pass rusher when Palo Verde Valley and Imperial face off next week.

At the moment, the Spartans are in third, while Brawley is in second.

The league will see a high scoring game when the Tigers and George Dagnino's team face off this week. The top two offenses in the league, Imperial comes in having scored 399 this season, while the Yellowjackets have scored 197. The Tigers scored 45 points last week as they topped Central.

Southwest fell to the Wildcats 42-7 last week, the largest margin of any game.
