Baseball Game Preview: Coronado Cougars vs. Basic Wolves

For the second straight game, Coronado will face off against Basic. The Cougars will welcome the Wolves at 3:30 p.m. on Thursday.

Tuesday just wasn't the day for Coronado's offense. They came up short against Basic on Tuesday, falling 10-0. The Cougars have now taken an 'L' in back-to-back games.

For Basic's part, they got a great performance from Johnny Villarreal as he didn't allow a single earned run while striking out six over five innings pitched. Villarreal has been consistent recently: he hasn't given up a single earned run any time he's pitched this season.

On the hitting side, the team relied heavily on Matthew Kelley, who went 3-for-4 with two runs, two doubles, and two RBI. That's the most doubles he has posted since back in March of 2025. Another player making a difference was Lyndon Lee, who went 2-for-3 with two runs, one double, and one RBI.

Basic hit smart and finished the game with only one strikeout. They easily outclassed their opponents in that department as Coronado struck out seven times.

Basic pushed their record up to 3-1 with the victory, which was their fifth straight at home dating back to last season. Those home wins came thanks in part to their hitting performance across that stretch, as they averaged 7.4 runs over those games. As for Coronado, their loss dropped their record down to 5-3.
