Softball Recap: Proviso East Victorious

Proviso East was handed a 15-run loss in their previous outing, but that didn't affect their clutch gene on Saturday. They sure made it a nail-biter, but they managed to escape with an 18-16 win over the Steinmetz College Prep Silver Streaks.

Jazlean Hernandez made a splash while hitting and pitching. She looked comfortable on the mound, striking out eight batters over 5.1 innings while giving up three earned (and seven unearned) runs off four hits. Those eight strikeouts gave her a new career-high. She was also stellar in the batter's box, scoring two runs and stealing four bases while going 2-for-5.

In other batting news, the team relied heavily on Gyselle Gallegos, who scored four runs and stole five bases while getting on base in four of her seven plate appearances. Another player making a difference was Brooklyn Rodgers, who scored two runs and stole three bases while getting on base in four of her seven plate appearances.

Proviso East kept the outfield on their toes and finished the game with 11 hits. They easily outclassed their opponents in that department as Steinmetz College Prep only managed five hits.

Proviso East's first victory this season bumped their record up to 1-2. As for Steinmetz College Prep, they are on a three-game losing streak that has dropped them down to 1-3.

Both squads will have to hit the road in their upcoming games. Proviso East will get to enjoy the win for a while: their next game is against Horizon Science Academy McKinley Park at 5:00 p.m. on April 8. As for Steinmetz College Prep, they will venture away from home to face off against Westinghouse at 4:30 p.m. on Monday. This will be Steinmetz College Prep's first chance to prove their worth in the conference.
