Baseball Game Preview: Parkersburg Big Reds vs. South Charleston Black Eagles

The Parkersburg Big Reds will challenge the South Charleston Black Eagles at 7:00 p.m. on Thursday. The last four games Parkersburg has played have been within two runs, so don't be surprised if it's a close one.

On Tuesday, Parkersburg narrowly escaped with a win as the team sidled past Grafton 2-1. That's two games straight that the Big Reds have won by just one run.

Gavin Fling spent all seven innings on the mound, and it's clear why: he surrendered a run (which was unearned) on six hits and racked up eight Ks. He has been nothing but reliable: he hasn't given up more than two walks in three consecutive appearances.

At the plate, Parkersburg's victory was truly a team effort as five different players contributed at least one hit. One of them was Jesse Showalter, who went a perfect 2-for-2 with one stolen base and one run.

Parkersburg hit smart and finished the game with only one strikeout. They easily outclassed their opponents in that department as Grafton struck out eight times.

Meanwhile, South Charleston came up short against Hurricane on Wednesday and fell 5-2. The Black Eagles have struggled against the Redskins recently, as the game was their ninth consecutive lost meeting.

Parkersburg is on a roll lately: they've won seven of their last eight games. That's provided a nice bump to their 9-10 record this season. They've had to fight for that success though, as they only beat their opponents by an average of 1.57 runs across that stretch. As for South Charleston, their defeat dropped their record down to 8-12.

Parkersburg took their win against South Charleston when the teams last played back in April of 2024 by a conclusive 10-0 score. Do the Big Reds have another victory up their sleeve, or will the Black Eagles turn the tables on them? We'll have the answer soon enough.
