Softball Recap: Mountain View Takes a Loss

Los Altos hit Mountain View with a four-run seventh inning on Tuesday, which goes a long way in explaining the final result. The Spartans took a 5-2 hit to the loss column at the hands of the Eagles. Spartans fans who chose to attend the game sure picked the wrong one: it was the first time the team's lost against the Eagles since on Tuesday.

Caroline Kim spent all seven innings on the mound, and it's clear why: she surrendered only one earned (and four unearned) runs on seven hits and racked up seven Ks. She has been nothing but reliable: she hasn't given up more than two walks in three consecutive appearances.

At the plate, Mountain View saw six different players step up and record at least one hit. One of them was Leilani Tanielu, who went 1-for-3 with one run, one double, and one RBI.

This is the second loss in a row for Mountain View and nudges their season record down to 8-10. Admittedly, the team was facing some tough opposition over that stretch, including 9-4 Homestead (their opponents had an average overall winning percentage of 62.1% over those games). As for Los Altos, the victory made it two in a row for them and bumps their season record up to 11-9.

Coming up, Mountain View will square off against Gunn at 4:00 p.m. on Thursday. The Titans have struggled to contain batters this season (they've allowed 9.43 runs per game on average), something the Spartans will no doubt try to take advantage of. As for Los Altos, they will take on Homestead at 4:00 p.m. on Thursday. The Eagles' pitchers better be ready for this one: the Mustangs have averaged an impressive 7 runs per game this season.
