Volleyball Game Preview: Western Pioneers vs. Whitney Wildcats

The Western Pioneers will face off against the Whitney Wildcats at 5:00 p.m. on Thursday. Western is coming into the contest hot, having won their last 14 games.

Last Tuesday, Western made easy work of Saddleback and carried off a 3-0 win.

Western's got stronger as the match went on, holding Saddleback to fewer and fewer points set over set. The match finished with set scores of 25-16, 25-11, 25-8.

Western can attribute much of their success to Byron Miranda, who had 33 digs and two assists, and Nathaniel Dumangas, who had 16 assists and seven digs. Miranda is crushing it when it comes to digs: he's had at least 11 every time he's taken the court this season.

Meanwhile, after a string of six wins, Whitney's good fortune finally ran out on Tuesday. They fell 3-1 to Oxford Academy.

The final score came out to 25-15, 23-25, 25-21, 25-14.

Western pushed their record up to 16-1 with the victory, which was their ninth straight on the road dating back to last season. As for Whitney, their loss dropped their record down to 14-13.

Everything went Western's way against Whitney in their previous meeting back in February of 2024, as Western made off with a 3-0 win. Do the Pioneers have another victory up their sleeve, or will the Wildcats turn the tables on them? We'll have the answer soon enough.
