Baseball Recap: Midway Triumphs

It may have taken eight innings to finish the job, but Midway ultimately got the result they hoped for on Thursday. They came out on top in a nail-biter against the Oliver Springs Bobcats, sneaking past 6-5. For those keeping track at home, that's the closest victory the Green Wave have posted since March 28, 2024.

Rowynn McClure was a major factor no matter where he played. He looked comfortable on the mound, not allowing a single earned run and allowed only one hit while striking out 12 over 4.1 innings pitched. He has become a key player for Midway: the team is 3-1 when he allows at most three hits, but 2-5 otherwise. McClure was also big at the plate, scoring three runs while going 2-for-3. The dominant performance gave him a new career-high in hits.

McClure wasn't the only one making solid contact as five players wound up with at least one hit. One of them was Peyton Steele, who went 1-for-4 with one triple and one RBI. That triple marked the first that Steele hit this season.

Midway is on a roll lately: they've won five of their last six matches. That's provided a massive bump to their 5-6 record this season. A key ingredient in that success has been their performance when it comes to hits: they averaged an imposing 9.17 hits in those games compared to only 3.2 in the others. Oliver Springs' defeat ended a three-game streak of away wins dating back to last season and brought them to 1-2.

Midway will have a chance to go back-to-back against Oliver Springs: the pair's next game is a rematch scheduled at 6:00 p.m. on Friday.
