Basketball Recap: Cali Russell's Big Game Can't Quite Lead Wellington-Napoleon over Leeton

Wellington-Napoleon was not able to break out of their rough patch on Friday as the team picked up their seventh straight defeat. They were four points away from ending the streak, but they lost a 34-30 heartbreaker at the hands of the Leeton Bulldogs. If the Tigers were looking for revenge after losing 49-27 to them when the teams met, then they'll just have to keep looking.

Wellington-Napoleon's loss came despite a true team effort from the offense, with many players turning in solid performances. Perhaps the best among them was Cali Russell, who posted 14 points. The dominant performance gave Russell a new career-high in points. Brilynn Zykan was another key player, putting up eight points along with seven boards and three steals.

Wellington-Napoleon's defeat dropped their record down to 2-12. As for Leeton, the victory (which was their fourth in a row) raised their record to 6-9.

Wellington-Napoleon will be taking part in a tournament against Odessa at 8:00 p.m. on Tuesday. As for Leeton, they will get to enjoy the win for a while: their next game is against Bunceton/Otterville at 5:30 p.m. on February 5th.
