Football Game Preview: Crescent Valley Raiders vs. Marshfield Pirates

The Crescent Valley Raiders will square off against the Marshfield Pirates at 7:00 p.m. on Friday. Both squads will be entering this one on the heels of a big victory.

Marshfield better have a healthy lead at halftime, because if Crescent Valley's game on Friday is any indication, that's when Crescent Valley really gets things going. Everything went the Raiders' way against Cottage Grove as they made off with a 48-25 win. The high-scoring effort was just what the Raiders needed considering they were shut out in their previous contest.

Crescent Valley got their victory on the backs of several key players, but it was Carlos Ochoa out in front who rushed for 107 yards and one touchdown on only five carries. Those 107 rushing yards gave Ochoa a new career-high. Another signal caller making a difference was Ryan Williams, who threw for 233 yards and four TDs.

Special teams also played a big role in the game for Crescent Valley, adding 11 points to the final score. The biggest highlight from special teams (and perhaps the team as a whole) came courtesy of Sterling Holland, who ran a punt back for a touchdown.

Meanwhile, after only six points in their last matchup, Marshfield made sure to put some points up on the board against North Bend on Friday. The Pirates blew past the Bulldogs 41-15. Given the Pirates' advantage in MaxPreps' Oregon football rankings (they are ranked 32nd, while the Bulldogs are ranked 96th) , the win wasn't entirely unexpected.

Crescent Valley better keep an eye on Enoch Niblett. He was instrumental in Marshfield's win, rushing for 140 yards and three scores on only 13 carries, while also throwing for 233 yards and a pair of touchdowns. Niblett's longest rush was for an impressive 61 yards, which helps to explain his lofty yards per carry total. Hadyn Widdicombe was another key player, picking up 122 receiving yards and one TD.

Marshfield didn't let much get past them through the air: they limited North Bend to a completion percentage of just 50%. The Pirates weren't nearly as limited: they posted one of 70.4%.

Marshfield's record is now 8-1. As for Crescent Valley, they now have a winning record of 5-4.
