Softball Recap: Economedes Comes Up Short

Economedes extended their losing streak to 11 on Friday, dropping their season record down to 4-16 in the process. They took a 10-7 hit to the loss column at the hands of the La Joya Coyotes. Unfortunately, that's the second time they've come up short against the Coyotes this season, as they also lost their prior matchup 8-4 back in March.

Evelyn Cano was cooking despite her team's loss, going 2-for-3 with two runs and one stolen base. That stolen base marked the first that she has snagged this season.

As for La Joya, they moved to 4-13 with that victory, which also ended their four-game losing streak. The high-scoring effort was just what they needed considering they were shut out in their previous match.

On La Joya's side, Alexia Guajardo spent all seven innings on the mound, and it's clear why: she surrendered seven runs (all of which were unearned) on four hits and racked up eight Ks.

At the plate, the team relied heavily on Merelly Rodriguez, who got on base in all four of her plate appearances with one home run, five RBI, and one double. Those five RBI gave her a new career-high. Another player making a difference was Liani Rodriguez, who got on base in all four of her plate appearances with three stolen bases and four runs.

Economedes didn't take long to hit the field again: they've already played their next contest, a 17-1 loss against Weslaco on the 15th. As for La Joya, they also wasted no time getting back out on the field and have already played their next game, a 23-0 defeat against Pharr-San Juan-Alamo on the 15th.
