The Los Fresnos Falcons will head out on the road to face off against the Sharyland Rattlers at 7:00 p.m. on Friday. Los Fresnos is currently enjoying a perfect season and no doubt wants to keep things rolling.
On Friday, Los Fresnos didn't have too much breathing room in their game against Edinburg, but they still walked away with a 21-15 win. The 21-point effort marked the Falcons' lowest-scoring matchup of the season, but in the end it didn't matter.
Robert Pineda had another great game (as he tends to do), rushing for 109 yards and one score, while also throwing for 102 yards on 13 of 21 attempts.
Meanwhile, while it was all tied up 14-14 at halftime, Sharyland was not quite Mercedes' equal in the second half on Friday. They were just a hair shy of victory and fell 34-33 to the Tigers. The loss was the Rattlers' first of the season.
Los Fresnos will have to contain Calvin Harris as he made an impact in Sharyland's last game. He rushed for 92 yards and three touchdowns on only eight carries, and also threw for 220 yards on ten of 24 attempts. Harris really tore up the turf during one magnificent 76-yard run. Sharyland also got help from Oscar Cantu, who showed off his sure hands for 155 receiving yards.
Even if they lost, Sharyland's defensive line still kept up the pressure with four sacks. In that department, Mauricio Benavides was the leader with two. Another thorn in Mercedes' side was Michael Ryan Esquivel, who made 18 total tackles (1.0 for loss).
Los Fresnos' victory bumped their record up to 5-0. As for Sharyland, their loss was their first of the season and makes their record 4-1.
Friday's contest might be decided on the ground. Los Fresnos has been unstoppable on the ground this season, having averaged 245.4 rushing yards per game. However, it's not like Sharyland struggles in that department as they've been averaging 186 rushing yards. There's a good chance Friday's game turns into a tough fight on the ground.
Everything came up roses for Los Fresnos against Sharyland when the teams last played back in October of 2024, as the team secured a 70-33 win. One of the biggest obstacles the team faced in that game was Harris, who threw for 372 yards and four TDs while completing 76.9% of his passes, and also punched in one score on the ground. Now that he's got a second chance to win this matchup, will the Falcons still be able to contain Harris? Check MaxPreps.com after the match to find out.
