Football Preview: Shelton Gaels vs. Branford Hornets
After two games on the road, Shelton is heading back home. They will welcome the Branford Hornets at 7:00 p.m. on Friday. Hopefully Shelton focused on turnovers this week as the team gave up four last Friday.
Last Friday, Shelton ended up a good deal behind Newtown and lost 42-28.
Despite their defeat, Shelton saw several players rise to the challenge and make noteworthy plays. Devin Reid, who rushed for 102 yards and a touchdown, was perhaps the best of all. Ryan Kinik was another key player, rushing for 38 yards and two touchdowns.
Even if they lost, Shelton's defensive line still kept up the pressure with five sacks. Leading the way was Cole St.Pierre with two. Shelton got some further help from Jack Vargo: he picked up a sack and made eight total tackles (3.0 for loss).
Meanwhile, Branford won a matchup that couldn't have been any closer, slipping by Hartford Public 9-8.
Jaeden Konesky had an outrageously good game as he rushed for 167 yards and a touchdown. Those 167 rushing yards gave him a new career-high. Rhamell Fairclough handled things on the ground, rushing for 113 yards.
Branford was unstoppable on the ground and finished the game with 291 rushing yards. That's the most rushing yards they've managed all season.
Branford didn't go easy on the quarterback and picked off three passes before the game was over. It was truly a group effort as Konesky, Shiloh Williams, and Alex LeBlanc picked up one apiece.
Shelton dropped their record down to 0-6 with the loss, which was their fifth straight on the road dating back to last season. As for Branford, their win ended a three-game drought at home and bumped them up to 2-4.
