Basketball Game Preview: Marshall Phoenix vs. Lincoln Mustangs

Marshall hasn't had much luck against Lincoln recently, but that could start to change on Thursday. The Marshall Phoenix will head out on the road to face off against the Lincoln Mustangs at 6:00 p.m. Both squads will be entering this one on the heels of a big victory.

Marshall was handed a heart-breaking two-point loss in their last matchup, but they sure didn't let that happen against June Jordan School of Equity on Tuesday. Marshall simply couldn't be stopped as they easily beat June Jordan School of Equity 80-27. The Phoenix have beaten the Jaguars the last five times they've met, but they better watch out: this was the closest the Jaguars has come to flipping the script.

Marshall got their victory on the backs of several key players, but it was Martel Peters out in front who went 9-for-20 to rack up 18 points along with seven boards and seven steals. Peters is on a roll when it comes to steals, as he's now grabbed two or more in each of the last four games he's played. Another player making a difference was Marcel Anderson, who went 5-for-9 on his way to 11 points in addition to seven assists and six steals.

Meanwhile, Lincoln had already won four in a row (a stretch where they outscored their opponents by an average of 18.3 points) and they went ahead and made it five on Thursday. They breezed past the Eagles to the tune of 70-37. The score at the end of the third wound up being the final score as the Mustangs just coasted through the last quarter.

Lincoln pushed their record up to 18-9 with the win, which was their sixth straight at home. The wins came thanks in part to their offensive performance across that stretch, as they averaged 69.5 points over those games. As for Marshall, their victory bumped their record up to 13-7.

Marshall might still be hurting after the 76-53 defeat they got from Lincoln in their previous meeting back in January of 2023. Can Marshall avenge their loss or is history doomed to repeat itself? We'll find out soon enough.
