Basketball Recap: Houston Academy Falls Despite Big Games from Mary Helen Mendheim and Molly Rutland

Houston Academy was not able to break out of their rough patch on Friday as the team picked up their third straight loss. They were three points away from ending the streak, but they lost a 31-28 heartbreaker at the hands of the Wicksburg Panthers. That's two games in a row now that the Raiders have lost by exactly three points.

Houston Academy's loss came despite strong showings from Molly Rutland and Mary Helen Mendheim. Rutland almost dropped a double-double on 13 points and nine blocks, while Mendheim dropped a double-double on ten rebounds and ten steals. Mendheim is on a roll when it comes to boards, as she's now pulled down eight or more in the last four games she's played. The team also got some help courtesy of Naya Bilbeisi, who posted four points and 11 rebounds.

Houston Academy's defeat dropped their record down to 5-5. As for Wicksburg, the win was the third in a row for them, bringing their record for this year to 15-7.

Houston Academy didn't take long to hit the court again: they've already played their next game, a 34-24 victory against Dale County on the 11th. As for Wicksburg, they will take on Northside Methodist Academy at 5:30 p.m. on Tuesday.
