The Hamden Hall Country Day Hornets will head out to take on the King Vikings at 5:00 p.m. on Friday. Hamden Hall Country Day is strutting in with some hitting muscle as they've averaged 6.4 runs per game this season.
Hamden Hall Country Day made up a huge gap compared to their last game against Cheshire Academy, but they still couldn't quite topple them. The Hornets fell just short of the Cats by a score of 3-1 on Wednesday. The defeat continues a trend for the Hornets in their meetings with the Cats: they've now lost three in a row.
Hamden Hall Country Day saw four different players step up and record at least one hit. One of them was Mara Patterson, who went 1-for-3 with one stolen base. That stolen base was Patterson's first of the season.
King came out on top against Frederick Gunn on Wednesday thanks in part to the team's impressive six-run sixth inning. The Vikings were the clear victors by a 10-2 margin over the Highlanders. Considering the Vikings' hitters had been struggling lately, the high-scoring outing was a much-needed turnaround.
Elizabeth Tuttle made a big impact while hitting and pitching. She looked comfortable on the mound, striking out 15 batters over seven innings while giving up just two earned runs off five hits. She has been consistent: she hasn't tossed less than five strikeouts any time she's pitched this season. She was also solid in the batter's box, going 3-for-5 with one triple, two RBI, and one run.
In other batting news, the team relied heavily on Hathaway Liparidis, who went a perfect 3-for-3 with three RBI, one stolen base, and one run. Another player making a difference was Emma Drexel, who got on base in four of her five plate appearances with two RBI and one run.
King kept the outfield on their toes and finished the game with 11 hits. They are a perfect 3-0 when they post 11 or more hits.
Hamden Hall Country Day now has a losing record of 2-3. As for King, they now have a winning record of 4-3.
The batters for both teams will have to hit smart on Friday as both have some strikeout artists on the roster. Hamden Hall Country Day has been retiring batters left and right this season, having averaged 8 strikeouts per game. However, it's not like King struggles in that department as they've been averaging 9.6 strikeouts. Considering how easily both teams rack up Ks, the hitters on both teams better bring their A-game into this one.
Hamden Hall Country Day might still be hurting after the 20-0 loss they got from King in their previous matchup back in May of 2019. Can the Hornets avenge their defeat or is history doomed to repeat itself? We'll find out soon enough.
