5A Region 3 recap October 8, 2013
Bingham extended the longest winning streak in 5A Region 3 this week by beating Brighton, 38-27. The victory was the seventh in a row for the team.
Copper Hills made the biggest jump in the national rankings this week, rising to 7,667 from 9,879. The improvement was largely due to a 19-7 victory over West Jordan last week.
Chipper Lucero threw for 371 yards and 2 touchdowns. He was 28-53 with 3 interceptions.
Scott Nichols was a beast in the backfield as Bingham bested the Bengals.
Nate Teahan made the biggest impact on defense this week as Alta fell to Jordan. The 5-foot-10 senior nabbed 3 interceptions.
Austin Kafentzis provided a threat through the air and on the ground as the Beetdiggers defeated the Hawks. He completed 18 passes for 230 yards and 1 touchdown and also ran for 164 yards. Kafentzis' favorite target this week was Mason Kruger, who caught 7 passes for 111 yards.
Lucero put up the best numbers through the air as Alta fell to Jordan. Lucero's favorite target this week was Mack Richards, who caught 10 passes for 140 yards.
Robert Stephens' team's Lucero and Richards led the league in both passing and receiving yards. 6-2 quarterback Lucero has thrown for 1,646 yards this season, while Richards has 41 catches for 722 yards. Eric Kjar's team's Clay Moss leads the league in rushing yards with 945.
The marquee game in the league this week will be the clash between David Peck's team and the Beetdiggers. The Miners enters the contest ranked second in the state, while Jordan ranks 10th.
Kafentzis of the the Beetdiggers is only 87 yards short of surpassing 1,000 rushing yards for the season. In 132 carries Kafentzis has put up 913 yards this year.
Jordan led 5A Region 3 in scoring this week by notching 42 points on the Hawks. Kafentzis ran for 164 yards during the win.
