Basketball Recap: Speedway Takes a Loss

Speedway played a tough match on Friday in which they were outscored in every quarter. They came up short against the Monrovia Bulldogs, falling 66-40. For those keeping track at home, that's the biggest loss the Sparkplugs have suffered against the Bulldogs since December 9, 2016.

Despite the loss, Speedway still got an impressive performance from Madelynn Matelic, who went 8 for 15 on her way to 20 points and six rebounds. The team also got some help courtesy of Hayli Clampitt, who posted seven points and five rebounds.

Leading Monrovia to victory were Emery Newlin and Camryn Wolfe. Newlin went 8 of 16 on her way to 18 points in addition to seven assists and five steals, while Wolfe put up 16 points along with five boards and five steals. Allie Tallent was another key player, putting up eight points and three steals.

Speedway dropped their record down to 2-6 with the defeat, which was their fourth straight at home. As for Monrovia, the win got them back to even at 4-4.

Speedway wasted no time getting back out on the court and has already played their next game, a 58-24 victory against Herron on the 17th. As for Monrovia, they also didn't take long to hit the court again: they've already played their next contest, a 60-54 win against Cascade on the 17th.
