Evan Benjey made a big impact while hitting and pitching. On the mound, he struck out seven batters over three innings while giving up just one earned (and two unearned) runs off one hit. Benjey was also stellar in the batter's box, getting on base in four of his five plate appearances with two stolen bases, three runs, and one RBI. He is on a roll when it comes to stolen bases, as he's now snagged at least one in each of the last three games he's played.
In other batting news, Brandon Salowitz was a standout: he got on base in all five of his plate appearances with three stolen bases, five RBI, and three runs. He has been hot recently, having posted two or more stolen bases the last three times he's played. Another player making a difference was Jaxen Peruski, who went 2-for-4 with four runs, two stolen bases, and four RBI.
Deckerville always had someone on base and finished the game having posted an OBP of .738. They easily outclassed their opponents in that department as Caseville only posted an OBP of .400.
Meanwhile, North Huron was not able to break out of their rough patch on Monday as the team picked up their fifth straight defeat dating back to last season. They came up short against All Saints Central, falling 13-5.
North Huron's loss dropped their record down to 0-2. As for Deckerville, the victory got them back to even at 2-2-1.
Deckerville was able to grind out a solid win over North Huron in their previous meeting back in April of 2024, winning 10-5. The rematch might be a little tougher for the Eagles since the team won't have the home-field advantage this time around. We'll see if the change in venue makes a difference.
