Chandon Sanderson put in work while hitting and pitching. He looked comfortable on the mound, striking out six batters over six innings while giving up just one earned (and two unearned) runs off three hits. He is becoming a predictor of Purnell Swett's success: when he allows at most one earned run the team is 2-1 (and 3-5 when he doesn't). Sanderson was also solid in the batter's box, scoring a run and stealing two bases while going 3-for-3. That's the most hits he has posted since back in April of 2024.
Sanderson wasn't the only one making solid contact as two players wound up with at least one hit. One of them was Conley Jacobs, who scored a run and stole a base while going 1-for-3.
Meanwhile, it was a Battle of the Birds when Seventy-First challenged Douglas Byrd on Tuesday. Seventy-First blew past Douglas Byrd 12-2. The result was nothing new for the Falcons, who have now won three matchups by ten runs or more so far this season.
Like Purnell Swett, Seventy-First also got a great game from a two-way player: Nasir Nelson. He didn't allow a single earned run and allowed only one hit while striking out 12 over 5.1 innings pitched. Nelson was also big at the plate, scoring a run and stealing two bases while going 2-for-4.
In other batting news, Cory Bush was incredible, scoring two runs and stealing six bases while getting on base in three of his four plate appearances. He also put up a double, which was his first of the season. Another player making a difference was Melvin Correa Martinez, who scored two runs and stole five bases while going 1-for-3.
Seventy-First always had someone on base and finished the game having posted an OBP of .526. They are a perfect 3-0 when they post an OBP of .513 or better.
Purnell Swett now has a losing record of 5-6. As for Seventy-First, their victory ended a five-game drought on the road and puts them at 3-7.
Everything went Purnell Swett's way against Seventy-First when the teams last played back in April of 2024, as Purnell Swett made off with a 23-2 win. The rematch might be a little tougher for Purnell Swett since the squad won't have the home-field advantage this time around. We'll see if the change in venue makes a difference.
