Baseball Recap: Niles West Comes Up Short

Niles West blew Deerfield out of the water the last time the pair played, but on Saturday Deerfield got their revenge. The Wolves fell just short of the Warriors by a score of 7-5. The Wolves were given a dose of their own medicine in this game as the Warriors apparently hadn't forgotten their loss the last time these teams played back in April of 2024.

Niles West got a good showing from Tom Cullen, who pitched 3.2 innings while giving up just one earned run off four hits. Cullen has been consistent: he hasn't given up more than one walk any time he's pitched this season.

On the hitting side, Kevin Foley and Lucas Som stepped up to the plate in a big way. Foley went a perfect 3-for-3 with one stolen base and one RBI, while Som went 2-for-3 with two stolen bases, one run, and one RBI. The team also got some help courtesy of Eli Ordower, who went 2-for-3 with one run and one double.

With the defeat, Niles West broke their three-game winning streak and moved their record to 8-12. As for Deerfield, their win ended a three-game drought at home and bumped them up to 8-10.

Both squads are looking forward to the support of their home crowds in their upcoming games. Niles West will host Vernon Hills at 4:45 p.m. on Monday. The Cougars will roll in looking for their fourth straight victory, something the Wolves surely won't give up without a fight. As for Deerfield, they will be playing at home against Maine South at 4:45 p.m. on Monday.
