Basketball Recap: Modesto Christian's Run of Five Straight Victories Now Over

After flying high against Tracy last Wednesday, Modesto Christian came back down to earth. The Modesto Christian Crusaders took a 67-62 hit to the loss column at the hands of the St. Joseph Knights. While losing is never fun, the Crusaders can't take it too hard given the team's big disadvantage in MaxPreps' California basketball rankings (they are ranked 28th, while the Knights are ranked fifth).

When it comes to explaining why Modesto Christian lost on Monday, don't look at Gavin Sykes. Despite the final result, he went 10 for 18 en route to 25 points and five assists. Another player making a difference was Trevor Dickson, who went 5 of 6 on his way to 14 points.

St. Joseph got their victory on the backs of several key players, but it was Tounde Yessoufou out in front who dropped a double-double on 25 points and 12 boards. The game was Yessoufou's 17th in a row with at least ten points. The team also got some help courtesy of Matas Siskauskas, who dropped a double-double on 13 points and 11 rebounds.

With the defeat, Modesto Christian broke their five-game winning streak and moved their record to 14-5. As for St. Joseph, the win (which was their eighth in a row) raised their record to 19-1.

Modesto Christian will take on St. Mary's at 7:30 p.m. on Wednesday. One thing working in Modesto Christian's favor is that they have posted at least 55 points every time they've taken the court this season. St. Joseph has already played their next contest, an 89-48 victory against Mission College Prep on the 21st.
