Whiteville had already won five in a row (a stretch where they outscored their opponents by an average of 15 points) and they went ahead and made it six on Thursday. They narrowly escaped with a victory as the team sidled past the Pender Patriots 47-44. The Wolfpack have seen this before: they got the W the last time they saw the Patriots, too.

When it comes to explaining why Pender lost, don't look at Ryan Howell. Despite the final result, he posted 18 points in addition to six boards and five blocks. Those 18 points gave Howell a new career-high. Another player making a difference was Jordan Hansley, who put up eight points and four steals.

Whiteville is on a roll lately: they've won eight of their last nine games, which provided a nice bump to their 8-5 record this season. Those victories came thanks to their offensive performance across that stretch, as they averaged 56.8 points per game. As for Pender, this is the second loss in a row for them and nudges their season record down to 2-7.

Whiteville won't have much time to rest: their next match is against East Bladen at 7:30 p.m. on Friday. As for Pender, they will also get right back to it: they'll square off against West Columbus at 7:30 p.m. on Friday. Pender is facing West Columbus at the right time seeing as West Columbus is stuck on a four-game losing streak.
