Game recap: Nationally ranked Santa Margarita drops guard against Mater Dei high school football team

Santa Margarita (Rancho Santa Margarita, Calif.) came into Saturday's contest ranked No. 3 in the MaxPreps Freeman Rankings, but was stunned by Mater Dei (Santa Ana, Calif.), 24-7. Mater Dei was ranked No. 34 nationally and No. 7 in the Freeman Rankings for California coming into the week.

After taking the lead on a touchdown run by Team Team in the first quarter, the Monarchs led 7-0 at the half.

Mater Dei saw its 7-point halftime lead fall to three entering the fourth.

Connor O'Brien made a difference for the Eagles. The senior caught one touchdown. He has now scored three touchdowns on the season.



MD's most effective player was Team. He ran for one touchdown, caught one touchdown and kicked one field goal and three extra points.

Santa Margarita's lone touchdown came on a 27-yard pass from Kyle Sweet to O'Brien in the third quarter.

The Santa Ana school came into the game allowing 10.8 points per game. SM's seven points were well below its season average of 37.3 per game.

A 21-14 Mater Dei victory was the result when the squads faced off last season.

The defeat comes as a step back for Santa Margarita, which notched a 21-0 victory over Servite in its previous outing.

Santa Margarita (6-1) goes up against Orange Lutheran in a Trinity game matchup next week, while Mater Dei (6-1) locks horns with St. John Bosco also in a Trinity game.
