Game recap: Early lead takes Marcos de Niza past Gilbert

Marcos de Niza (Tempe, Ariz.) jumped out to an early lead against Gilbert (Ariz.) and never looked back on the way to a 49-7 victory on Saturday.

The Padres put up 14 points in the opening frame. Marcos de Niza scored on a touchdown pass by Andrew Molina to Paul Elvira and a Molina touchdown pass to Jacquese Moore.

MN was up 28-7 at the half after taking the lead on a Molina touchdown pass to Elvira in the first quarter.

The Tempe school expanded its lead to 42 points entering the fourth quarter. The Padres scored three times in the third, including once on a Kamron Johnson touchdown run.



Marcos de Niza's most effective player was Molina. The senior quarterback threw three touchdowns.

Conner Helvig made a difference for the Tigers. He ran for one touchdown.

Gilbert's lone touchdown came on a 37-yard run by Helvig in the second quarter.

Led by Priest Willis, MN went into the matchup giving up only 12.5 points per game. The seven points that GHS ended with were below its average of 11.3 coming into the game.

The Padres also won the meeting between the two teams last season, 24-13.

In a I Section II game next week Gilbert (1-6) takes on Skyline, and Marcos de Niza (6-1) will go up against McClintock in a II Section III game.
