Softball Recap: Voyager Academy Triumphs

Voyager Academy never let their opponents score on Friday. They put the hurt on the Durham Academy Cavaliers with a sharp 16-0 win. The high-scoring performance was a welcome turnaround for the Vikings' hitters, who had struggled in the games prior.

Cameron Nelson and Ella Bartes made a splash while hitting and pitching. On the mound, Nelson pitched two innings while giving up no earned runs off one hit. Meanwhile, Bartes tossed two innings while giving up no earned runs or hits. She has been consistent recently: she hasn't given up more than two walks in three consecutive appearances. At bat, Nelson went 1-for-3 with two runs, one stolen base, and one RBI, while Bartes went 1-for-3 with one home run, two runs, and two RBI. Those runs marked the first that Nelson has scored this season.

In other batting news, the team relied heavily on Maleyva Pardo, who went a perfect 4-for-4 with three runs, three RBI, and one triple. Those RBI were her first of the season. Caroline Burton was another key player, going 2-for-3 with four RBI, two doubles, and one run.

Voyager Academy always had someone on base and finished the game having posted an OBP of .576. That's the best OBP they've posted all season.

Voyager Academy's first victory this season bumped their record up to 1-6. As for Durham Academy, they have been struggling recently as they've lost six of their last seven contests. That's put a noticeable dent in their 5-8 record this season.

Both squads will have to hit the road in their upcoming games. Voyager Academy will look to takes advantage of their home field for the first time this season as they takes on Vance Charter at 5:00 p.m. on Tuesday. The Vikings' pitchers better be ready for this one: the Knights have averaged an impressive 8.6 runs per game this season. As for Durham Academy, they will take on Cary Academy at 4:30 p.m. on Tuesday. The Chargers have struggled to contain batters this season (they've allowed 14.38 runs per game on average), something the Cavaliers will no doubt try to take advantage of.
