Football Game Preview: Bishop Stang Spartans vs. Cathedral Panthers

The Bishop Stang Spartans will head out to square off against the Cathedral Panthers at 6:00 p.m. on Friday.

Bishop Stang is coming in off a wild two-game stretch: after soaring to 42 points last Friday, they were much more limited against St. Mary's on Friday. They were beaten by St. Mary's 35-8. While losing is never fun, Bishop Stang can't take it too hard given the team's big disadvantage in MaxPreps' Massachusetts football rankings (they are ranked 134th, while St. Mary's is ranked 49th).

Meanwhile, Cathedral waltzed into their contest on Friday with three straight wins... but they left with four. They claimed a resounding 42-7 win over the Pirates. The score at the end of the third wound up being the final score as the Panthers just coasted through the last quarter.

Cathedral's win came from a few key players Bishop Stang will need to keep an eye on. One of the most notable was Taqaire Bell, who picked up 111 receiving yards and one TD, and also rushed for 42 yards and one touchdown. His longest reception was for an incredible 92 yards. Another player making a difference was DJ Desir, who rushed for 67 yards and a pair of scores.

Cathedral was unstoppable on the ground and finished the game with 241 rushing yards. That's the most rushing yards they've posted since the start of last season.

Bishop Stang now has a losing record of 2-3. As for Cathedral, their victory bumped their record up to 4-1.

Bishop Stang beat Cathedral 28-18 in their previous matchup back in October of 2024. The rematch might be a little tougher for the Spartans since the squad won't have the home-field advantage this time around. We'll see if the change in venue makes a difference.
