Softball Game Preview: Westfield Wolverines vs. Cassadaga Valley Cougars

Westfield is 9-1 against Cassadaga Valley since May of 2017 and they'll have a chance to extend that dominance on Friday. The Wolverines will be playing at home against the Cougars at 3:15 p.m. Westfield is strutting in with some hitting muscle as they've averaged 7.9 runs per game this season.

The home team had come away the winner the last four times Westfield and Frewsburg had met, but sadly for the fans who attended this one that wasn't the case. The Wolverines blew past the Bears 14-3 on Thursday. The Wolverines might be getting used to big wins seeing as the team has won four matchups by six runs or more this season.

Eva Gnadzinski spent all seven innings on the mound, and it's clear why: she surrendered only one earned (and two unearned) runs on six hits and racked up seven Ks. She has been nothing but reliable: she hasn't given up more than one earned run in four consecutive appearances.

At the plate, Westfield got a massive performance out of Sydney Hotchkiss, who went 3-for-5 with three runs, four RBI, and two doubles. That's the most hits Hotchkiss has posted since back in April. Another player making a difference was Mackenzie Schumaker, who went 3-for-5 with three runs, three doubles, and two RBI.

Meanwhile, Wednesday just wasn't the day for Cassadaga Valley's offense. They came up short against Chautauqua Lake on Wednesday, falling 15-0. The game marked the first time this year in which the Cougars were not able to get on the board.

Cassadaga Valley has been struggling recently as they've lost five of their last six contests. That's put a noticeable dent in their 4-5 record this season. As for Westfield, their win bumped their record up to 7-5.

Westfield took their victory against Cassadaga Valley in their previous matchup back in April by a conclusive 16-2 score. Will the Wolverines repeat their success, or do the Cougars have a new game plan this time around? We'll find out soon enough.
