League recap: West Point extends winning streak with victory over Oxford

5A Region 1 recap Oct. 30, 2012

West Point extended the longest winning streak in 5A Region 1 this week by beating Oxford, 35-21. The win marks sixth in a row for the the Green Wave.

Saltillo's offense was tough to stop this week, as it produced the league's top passer, rusher and receiver. Andrew Soper threw for 141 yards and AJ Rye had 98 yards receiving. On the ground Soper chipped in 153 yards. AJ Hunt helped Saltillo's passing attack out by catching two balls for 24 yards.

Deuce Lyons made the biggest impact on defense this week as Center Hill beat New Hope. The 6-foot-4 defensive lineman forced two fumbles, recorded one fumble and grabbed one sack.

6-foot-5 quarterback Parker Adamson of the Chargers is the league leader in passing yards this season with 1602. He has also thrown 12 touchdowns. On the ground, the Tigers' Soper has rushed for 919 yards which leads the league. The leading receiver in the league this season is Hunt. The Saltillo star has 28 catches for 774 yards.

Soper of the Saltillo is only 81 yards short of surpassing 1,000 rushing yards for the season.

A big matchup in the league this week will be when Oxford takes on Clarksdale. Johnny Hill's team is currently in first, while the Wildcats are in fifth.

Lake Cormorant led 5A Region 1 in scoring this week after putting up 47 points on Clarksdale.
