Basketball Recap: Mentor Comes Up Short

Mentor lost against Lutheran East back in February of 2024, and unfortunately they wound up with the same result on Tuesday. The Mentor Cardinals lost 83-57 to the Lutheran East Falcons. While losing is never fun, the Cardinals can't take it too hard given the team's big disadvantage in MaxPreps' Ohio basketball rankings (they are ranked 53rd, while the Falcons are ranked tenth).

When it comes to explaining why Mentor lost, don't look at Jack Kennedy. Despite the final result, he went 9-for-16 en route to 21 points in addition to five rebounds and three steals. Kennedy is also on a roll when it comes to field goal percentage, as he's posted one of at least 45% in the last three games he's played. Dominic Baroni was another key player, putting up four points along with six boards and six blocks.

Even though they lost, Mentor smashed the offensive glass and finished the game with 16 offensive boards. That strong performance was nothing new for the team: they've now pulled down at least nine offensive rebounds in three consecutive matchups.

TJ Crumble was his usual excellent self, scoring 24 points for Lutheran East. The team also got some help courtesy of Dylan Zeigler, who posted 15 points.

Mentor's defeat dropped their record down to 12-6. As for Lutheran East, they pushed their record up to 14-4 with the win, which was their fourth straight on the road.

Mentor wasted no time getting back out on the court and has already played their next contest, a 109-70 loss against Brunswick on the 14th. As for Lutheran East, they also didn't take long to hit the court again: they've already played their next game, a 93-54 victory against Rhodes on the 14th.
