Football Recap: Deandre Cardine Leads Bowman Academy's Defense on Saturday

North Newton came into Saturday's game looking for another win against Bowman Academy, but King Whisenton wouldn't allow it. The Eagles put the hurt on the Spartans with a sharp 40-14 win on Saturday with plenty of help from Whisenton, who rushed for 178 yards and a pair of touchdowns while picking up 9.4 yards per carry, and also caught one TD. He also deserves a shoutout for his performance on D, forcing one fumble and making two total tackles.

Quentavious Fly was another key player, gaining 97 total yards and two touchdowns. He showed off some serious burst, lighting up the secondary with a catch for 65 yards.

On the defensive side of the ball, a lot of the credit has to go to Bowman Academy's defense and their five sacks. North Newton's QB won't forget Deandre Cardine anytime soon given he sacked him twice. Another thorn in the Spartans' side was Nathaniel Artest, who forced one fumble and made 11 total tackles (2.0 for loss).

North Newton lost despite a true team effort on offense. The best among them was Kiel Martin, who picked up 93 receiving yards and one score. He is becoming a predictor of North Newton's success: when he posts at least 80 receiving yards the team is 2-1 (and 1-3 when he doesn't).

The victory made it two in a row for Bowman Academy and bumps their season record up to 4-3. That said, the team wasn't facing the toughest opposition over that stretch, as it included 2-4 North White and 3-4 North Newton. As for North Newton, they are on a three-game losing streak that has dropped them down to 3-4.

Bowman Academy didn't take long to hit the field again: they've already played their next contest, a 47-14 win against Tri-County on the 10th. As for North Newton, they also wasted no time getting back out on the field and have already played their next matchup, a 15-12 victory against North White on the 10th.
