Volleyball Recap: Xavier Comes Up Short

After flying high against Appleton North on Tuesday, Xavier came back down to earth. The Hawks fell 3-1 to the Fox Valley Lutheran Foxes on Thursday. It was the first time this season that the Hawks let down their fans at home.

Xavier started the match hot and won the first set, but they struggled down the stretch and lost the last three. The match finished with set scores of 16-25, 25-18, 25-21, 25-11.

Loss or not, Xavier got some senior leadership from Grace Hackl and Bella Velasquez. Hackl had 15 digs and three assists, while Velasquez had ten digs and two aces. With that strong performance, Hackl is now averaging an impressive 10.1 digs per game.

Riley Schmitz was nothing short of spectacular for Fox Valley Lutheran: she had ten digs and six aces. That's the most aces Schmitz has posted over her last 18 contests. Another player making a difference was Sammie Thomas, who had nine digs and three aces.

Xavier's defeat dropped their record down to 22-8. As for Fox Valley Lutheran, they are on a roll lately: they've won 12 of their last 15 matches. That's provided a nice bump to their 23-8 record this season.

Both teams will have to hit the road in their upcoming matchups. Xavier will venture away from home to challenge Green Bay East at 7:00 p.m. on Tuesday. As for Fox Valley Lutheran, they will head out to face off against Oconto Falls at 7:00 p.m. on Thursday.
