Softball Recap: Waukegan Comes Up Short

Waukegan had lost seven straight on the road, but on Monday they dropped down to 1-16 to make it eight. They came up short against the Mundelein Mustangs, falling 16-0. Unfortunately, that's the second time they've come up short against the Mustangs this season, as they also lost their prior matchup 17-5 on Thursday.

As for Mundelein, they have been performing incredibly well recently as they've won 12 of their last 13 games. That's provided a nice bump to their 16-4 record this season. The wins came thanks in part to their pitching effort, having only surrendered 1.8 runs on average over those games.

For Mundelein's part, Shae Johnson made a splash while hitting and pitching. She looked comfortable on the mound, keeping things locked down with no earned runs or hits while striking out 11 over four innings pitched. Johnson has been nothing but reliable: she hasn't tossed less than five strikeouts in 11 consecutive appearances. She was also solid in the batter's box, going a perfect 2-for-2 with one stolen base, one run, and one double. That stolen base was her first of the season.

In other batting news, Mundelein got a massive performance out of Kieley Tomas, who went 2-for-4 with two runs, one triple, and one double. Tomas is on a roll when it comes to triples, as she's now hit at least one in each of the last three games she's played. The team also got some help courtesy of Emily Courtney, who went 1-for-2 with two runs, one stolen base, and one double.

Coming up, Waukegan will challenge Zion-Benton at 4:30 p.m. on Wednesday. As for Mundelein, they will face off against Lake Forest at 4:45 p.m. on Wednesday. The Scouts have struggled to contain batters this season (they've allowed 12.32 runs per game on average), something the Mustangs will no doubt try to take advantage of.
