Softball Recap: New Athens' Loss Ends Four-Game Winning Streak at Home

New Athens dropped their record down to 7-4 on Tuesday, which also ended the team's four-game streak of wins at home. They lost 9-0 to the Dupo Tigers. The Yellow Jackets were given a dose of their own medicine in this game as the Tigers apparently hadn't forgotten their loss the last time these teams played back in April of 2024.

Mallory Kohnen spent all seven innings on the mound, and it's clear why: she surrendered just two earned (and seven unearned) runs on nine hits and racked up six Ks.

As for Dupo, with the victory, they broke their three-game losing streak and moved their record to 5-8. They not only won on Tuesday, but they posted their biggest win since March 27th (when they won 11-2).

On Dupo's side, not much got past Addison Thompson, who gave up just four hits and racked up seven Ks to keep New Athens off the board. Thompson has been nothing but reliable on the mound: she hasn't tossed less than seven strikeouts in three consecutive appearances.

At the plate, Kaylyn Woods was incredible, going 2-for-4 with three runs, four RBI, and one triple. Those four RBI gave her a new career-high. Another player making a difference was Kylie Kloess, who went 2-for-4 with two RBI, one run, and one double.

Both teams are looking forward to the support of their home crowds in their upcoming games. New Athens will square off against Chester at 4:30 p.m. on Wednesday. The Yellow Jackets' pitchers better be ready for this one: the Yellowjackets have averaged an impressive 7.1 runs per game this season. As for Dupo, they will challenge Wesclin at 4:30 p.m. on Wednesday.
