Maria Young spent all seven innings on the mound, and it's clear why: she surrendered only one earned run on three hits and racked up 14 Ks. She has been consistent for a while: she hasn't tossed less than five strikeouts in 19 consecutive appearances.
Meanwhile, Anthony Wayne had already won six in a row (a stretch where they outscored their opponents by an average of 10.3 runs) and they went ahead and made it seven on Friday. They were the clear victors by a 15-1 margin over the Panthers. Considering the Generals have won 14 matchups by more than five runs this season, Friday's blowout was nothing new.
Casey Lyons was a major factor no matter where she played. On the mound, she struck out nine batters over five innings while giving up just one earned run off two hits (and only one walk). Lyons was also big at the plate, going a perfect 1-for-1 with one home run and five RBI. Those five RBI gave her a new career-high.
In other batting news, Anthony Wayne let Payton DeTray and Lyla Carrizales run wild. DeTray went 2-for-3 with one home run, two runs, and one stolen base, while Carrizales went 1-for-2 with one home run, two runs, and one stolen base. Megan Sumner was another key player, going a perfect 3-for-3 with one triple and two RBI.
Anthony Wayne lost a few balls and finished the game with three home runs. They easily outclassed their opponents in that department as Whitmer didn't launched any.
Avon's loss dropped their record down to 11-13. As for Anthony Wayne, their record is now 23-2.
The batters for both teams will have to hit smart on Saturday as both have some strikeout artists on the roster. Avon has been retiring batters left and right this season, having averaged 10.7 strikeouts per game. However, it's not like Anthony Wayne struggles in that department as they've been averaging an even more impressive 8.9 strikeouts. Considering how easily both teams rack up Ks, the hitters on both teams better bring their A-game into this one.
