Baseball Recap: Port Byron Comes Up Short

Port Byron couldn't beat Central on Monday even though they stacked five runs on them in the fifth inning. The Panthers fell just short of the Rebels by a score of 9-8. Unfortunately, that's the second time they've come up short against the Rebels this season, as they also lost their prior matchup 2-0 last Monday.

Connor Usowski was huge while hitting and pitching even without the win. On the mound, he struck out 13 batters over 6.2 innings while giving up three earned (and six unearned) runs off six hits. He has become a key player for Port Byron: the team is 5-2 when he posts at least ten strikeouts, but 3-4 otherwise. Usowski was also big at the plate, getting on base in all four of his plate appearances with one home run, two runs, and one stolen base.

In other batting news, Matt Howell was cooking despite his team's loss, going 3-for-4 with two RBI.

Port Byron's defeat ended a three-game streak of wins at home and dropped them to 8-6. As for Central, they pushed their record up to 6-1 with the victory, which was their third straight on the road.

Coming up, Port Byron will challenge Tully at 4:30 p.m. on Monday. As for Central, they will take on Weedsport at 4:30 p.m. on Tuesday.
