Game recap

CUPERTINO, Calif. - Saturday saw a surprise upset in California where Homestead (Cupertino, Calif.) triumphed over Santa Clara (Calif.) 29-15.

The Bruins pulled ahead on a touchdown pass by Daniel Chipres to Patrick McCaffrey, and subsequently went into halftime leading 7-6. The Mustangs scored the winning points with a Mark Hirschbek touchdown run that came in the third quarter.

Hirschbek stood out for Homestead in the win. The senior quarterback ran for one touchdown. He has now scored two touchdowns on the season.

Chipres made a difference for Santa Clara. The junior quarterback threw one touchdown.

HHS had struggled this season, allowing 41.8 points per game. However, the Cupertino school's defense dug in and limited SC well below its season average of 29.5 points per game.

The victory was a step in the right direction for the Mustangs, which was coming off a 56-7 defeat at the hands of Saratoga in its previous game.

Homestead (3-4) will play a De Anza game against Mountain View next week, while Santa Clara (5-2) will take on Wilcox also in a De Anza game.
