Basketball Recap: Kings Christian Extends Winning Streak to Six

Kings Christian waltzed into their game on Friday with five straight wins... but they left with six. Everything went their way against the Laton Mustangs as they made off with a 54-31 win. That's the second time they've managed to beat them this season, as they also won 76-13 back in November of 2024.

Kings Christian's success was the result of a balanced attack that saw several players step up, but Andrew Ortega led the charge by going 6 of 10 en route to 16 points and three steals. Ortega is on a roll when it comes to steals, as he's now grabbed three or more in the last six games he's played. Elyas Miro was another key player, putting up 13 points and five steals.

Kings Christian smashed the offensive glass and finished the game with ten offensive boards. That strong performance was nothing new for the team: they've now pulled down at least nine offensive rebounds in 24 consecutive matches dating back to last season.

Despite the loss, Laton still got an impressive performance from Jesus Bocanegra, who went 8 for 12 on his way to 16 points and seven boards. Those 16 points gave Bocanegra a new career-high. The team also got some help courtesy of Yann Jimenez, who posted ten points along with five rebounds and three steals.

Kings Christian has been performing incredibly well recently as they've won seven of their last eight contests, which provided a nice bump to their 15-3 record this season. Those victories came thanks to their offensive performance across that stretch, as they averaged 64.8 points per game. As for Laton, they have traveled a rocky road recently having lost eight of their last nine games, which put a noticeable dent in their 3-13 record this season.

Kings Christian didn't take long to hit the court again: they've already played their next matchup, a 44-34 defeat against Kennedy on the 18th. As for Laton, they will venture away from home to take on Riverdale Christian at 6:00 p.m. on Tuesday.
