Football Recap: Amarillo Sandies vs. Tascosa Rebels
Amarillo's game on Friday was all tied up 22-22 at the half, but sadly for them it didn't stay that way. They took a 34-29 hit to the loss column at the hands of the Tascosa Rebels. The Sandies were given a dose of their own medicine in this game as the Rebels apparently hadn't forgotten their defeat the last time these teams played back in September of 2023.
Despite the loss, Amarillo still got an impressive performance from Jett Lopez, who threw for 237 yards and three touchdowns, and also punched in a touchdown on the ground. Lopez has been hot , having posted three or more passing touchdowns the last six times he's played. Another player making a difference was Oliver Parsons, who picked up 72 receiving yards and two touchdowns.
Amarillo wouldn't let Tascosa keep a hold of the ball as they managed to force two fumbles. Amarillo can thank David Herrera and Zy Aokuso for forcing both of them. Herrera also set a new season high mark in total tackles with 17.
Coltyn Fulton continued his habit of posting crazy stat lines for Tascosa, rushing for 131 yards and two touchdowns, while also throwing for 186 yards and two touchdowns on only 11 passes. Tj Tillman was Fulton's top target, picking up 129 receiving yards and two touchdowns.
With the loss, Amarillo broke their three-game winning streak and moved their record to 5-4. As for Tascosa, the victory got them back to even at 5-5.
The two teams are set to take part in some playoff action in their next matches. Amarillo will take on El Dorado at 7:30 p.m. on Friday. El Dorado knows how to get points on the board -- the team has finished with 31 points or more in their past ten matchups -- so hopefully Amarillo likes a good challenge. As for Tascosa, they will square off against Americas at 6:00 p.m. on Thursday. Tascosa is strutting in with some offensive muscle as they've averaged 33.8 points per game this season.
