Baseball Recap: Gateway Comes Up Short

Gateway extended their losing streak to nine on Wednesday, dropping them down to 4-11. They took a 7-2 hit to the loss column at the hands of the Thomas Jefferson Jaguars. Unfortunately, that's the second time they've come up short against the Jaguars this season, as they also lost their prior matchup 10-0 on Tuesday.

Gateway saw three different players step up and record at least one hit. One of them was Trentin Acres, who went 1-for-3 with one double and one RBI.

As for Thomas Jefferson, the victory (which was their eighth in a row) raised their record to 11-3. The wins came thanks in part to their pitching effort, having only surrendered 0.8 runs on average over those games.

On Thomas Jefferson's side, Bryce Butler and Justin Berberich made a splash while hitting and pitching. On the mound, Butler struck out six batters over 2.2 innings while giving up just one earned run off two hits. Meanwhile, Berberich struck out six batters over 3.1 innings while giving up no earned runs or hits (and only one walk). Those six strikeouts gave him a new career-high. At bat, Butler went 1-for-4 with two runs, one stolen base, and one RBI, while Berberich went 1-for-2 with one run and one RBI. That RBI marked the first that Butler has brought in this season.

Looking ahead, Gateway will square off against Fox Chapel at 4:45 p.m. on Thursday. As for Thomas Jefferson, they will be playing at home against Trinity at 4:30 p.m. on Friday. The last three games the Hillers have played have been within two runs, so don't be surprised if it's a close one.
