Preview: Powhatan Indians vs. Huguenot Falcons
Powhatan has enjoyed a two-game homestand but will soon have to dust off their road jerseys. They will take on the Huguenot Falcons at 7:00 p.m. on Friday. Both squads will be entering this one on the heels of a big victory.
Last Friday, Powhatan took their contest at home with ease, bagging a 49-6 win over Richmond City School of the Arts.
Powhatan got their win on the backs of several key players, but it was Matthew Layman out in front who threw for 161 yards and three touchdowns while completing 88.9% of his passes. Matt Henderson was in the mix too, providing Powhatan with two touchdowns.
Even though Huguenot has not done well against Monacan recently (they were 0-8 in their previous eight matchups), they didn't let the past get in their way on Friday. Huguenot claimed a resounding 41-6 victory over Monacan on the road. Given Huguenot's advantage in MaxPreps' Virginia football rankings (they are ranked 83rd, while Monacan is ranked 201st), the result wasn't entirely unexpected.
Huguenot's win was the result of several impressive offensive performances. One of the most notable came from Jason Wright, who threw for 300 yards while picking up 14.3 yards per attempt. Another player making a difference was John Washington, who rushed for 103 yards and a touchdown on only nine carries.
Powhatan pushed their record up to 7-3 with that victory, which was their third straight at home. Those victories were due in large part to their offensive dominance across that stretch, as they averaged 42.0 points per game. As for Huguenot, the win makes it two in a row for them and bumps their season record up to 7-2.
Powhatan came up short against Huguenot in their previous matchup back in September, falling 26-22. Can Powhatan avenge their loss or is history doomed to repeat itself? We'll find out soon enough.
