Baseball Recap: El Capitan Vaqueros vs. Helix Highlanders
El Capitan extended their losing streak to four on Thursday, dropping their season record down to 7-11 in the process. They took a 4-1 hit to the loss column at the hands of the Helix Highlanders. Unfortunately, that's the second time they've come up short against the Highlanders this season, as they also lost their prior matchup 3-1 on Tuesday.
As for Helix, the victory was the third in a row for them, bringing their record up to 10-9. The wins came thanks in part to their pitching effort, having only surrendered 2.3 runs on average over those games.
For Helix's part, Sean Sherrod spent all seven innings on the mound, and it's clear why: he surrendered only one earned run on two hits and racked up seven Ks. Sherrod has been nothing but reliable: he hasn't given up more than two walks in four consecutive appearances.
At the plate, Antoin Simpson was incredible, going 2-for-3 with one home run and three RBI. He is becoming a predictor of Helix's success: when he posts at least three RBI the team is undefeated (and 7-9 when he doesn't). Jake Johnson also deserves some recognition as he launched his first home run of the season.
We've got plenty of inter-league action coming up soon. El Capitan will take on rival Grossmont at 4:00 p.m. on Friday. Meanwhile, Helix is set to face off against their familiar foe Valhalla at 4:00 p.m. on Friday.
