Basketball Game Preview: High Island Cardinals vs. Brookeland Wildcats

High Island is 1-6 against Brookeland since December of 2017 but they'll have a chance to close the gap a little bit on Friday. Both will face off at 7:00 p.m. without much rest having both just played. The two teams are strolling into their matches after big wins in their previous games.

High Island is headed in fresh off scoring the most points they have all season. They blew past Leggett 60-40 on Thursday. The victory made it back-to-back wins for the Cardinals.

Cam'Ron Medina continued his habit of posting crazy stat lines, dropping a double-double on 30 points and 12 boards. That makes it seven consecutive games in which he has scored at least a third of High Island's points. Another player making a difference was Ruben Hernandez, who posted seven points and nine rebounds.

Meanwhile, Brookeland waltzed into their contest on Thursday with five straight wins... but they left with six. They blew past the Mustangs, posting an 86-28 victory. Given the Wildcats' advantage in MaxPreps' Texas basketball rankings (they are ranked 458th, while the Mustangs are ranked 1589th), the result wasn't entirely unexpected.

Brookeland has also been performing incredibly well recently as they've won eight of their last nine games, which provided a nice bump to their 19-7 record this season. The wins came thanks to their offensive performance across that stretch, as they averaged 96.1 points per game. As for High Island, their win ended a ten-game drought on the road dating back to last season and puts them at 4-18.

High Island was dealt a bruising 113-9 defeat at the hands of Brookeland when the teams last played back in December of 2024. That match was all but decided by halftime, at which point High Island was down 70-5.
