Basketball Recap: Desert View Takes a Loss

Desert View lost against Nogales back in January and unfortunately they wound up with the same result on Tuesday. The Desert View Jaguars were beaten by the Nogales Apaches 80-25. While losing is never fun, the Jaguars can't take it too hard given the team's big disadvantage in MaxPreps' Arizona basketball rankings (they are ranked 240th, while the Apaches are ranked 43rd).

Desert View lost despite a true team effort on offense, the best among them being Solana Celaya, who posted five points and 14 boards. Celaya is on a roll when it comes to rebounds, as she's now pulled down nine or more in the last three games she's played. Another player making a difference was Andrea Cervantes, who had three points and five boards.

Nogales' success was the result of a balanced attack that saw several players step up, but Johanna Simpson led the charge by dropping a double-double on 13 points and ten steals. Nogales is 16-3 when Simpson posts three or more steals, but 0-5 otherwise. Arlette Munoz was another key player, putting up eight points in addition to nine steals and five assists.

This is the second loss in a row for Desert View and nudges their season record down to 4-19. As for Nogales, they are on a roll lately: they've won eight of their last nine matches, which provided a nice bump to their 16-8 record this season.

Desert View wasted no time getting back out on the court and has already played their next contest, a 60-34 loss against Cienega on the 7th. As for Nogales, they also didn't take long to hit the court again: they've already played their next game, a 75-28 win against Buena on the 7th.
