Rankings and leading scorers throughout state's early high school basketball season.
St. Francis Borgia seniors Tyler Ressel and Nathan Scheer scored 55 points collectively to lead the defending Class 4 champions to an 81-75 win over defending Class 5 king Chaminade on Monday.
But it was sophomore point guard Bryce Dolan who drilled a pair of 3-pointers to pull Borgia even with the Red Devils after Chaminade stretched a two-point halftime advantage into a 45-39 lead early in the second half.
Dolan’s hot outside shooting keyed a 12-2 Knight run that put coach Dave Neier’s squad on top for good at 51-47. For the game, Borgia knocked down 12 3-pointers to extend its winning streak to 23.
Chaminade junior Bradley Beal, who recently committed to Florida, did pull the Red Devils within 71-70 with a lay-up at the two-minute, 28-second mark of the fourth quarter. But St. Francis Borgia knocked down 10 of 13 free throws down the stretch.
"They really have a good team," Neier told the St. Louis Post Dispatch of Chaminade. "I’m not fooling anybody on that. I think everyone knows that. They won the 5A championship last year and they are one of the favorites this year. It took a total team effort for us to be in the game with them and for us to have the opportunity at the end to come out with the win."
Ressel led the way for Borgia with 29 points in the contest, while Scheer scored 26. Beal was the game’s leading scorer with 33 points. Brendan Kelly and Luke Bumgarner added 13 and 12 points, respectively, for the Red Devils. Borgia hasn’t lost since falling 76-67 to the Red Devils last January.
So far this season the Knights have upended defending Class 3 champion Maplewood-Richmond Heights (75-54), defending Class 3 runner-up Whitfield (78-75), 2009 Class 4 semifinalist Jefferson City-Helias (61-44) and Chaminade to earn the billing as Missouri’s best boys basketball team.
Below is a look at some of the top scoring performances from last weekend and the rest of the boys and girls basketball rankings.
